Having played 44 games in all competitions for Celtic and made the four-man shortlist for the Scottish PFA Player of the Year prize, it is fair to say that van Dijk looks in fantastic form ahead of next month’s World Cup.

A call-up to the World Cup squad would certainly be a fitting end to a dream debut season with the Hoops. Speaking to Celtic’s official website, the Dutch defender said: “Every player who has a slight chance can dream of it and I still dream of it. We will see next week when they announce the squad.”

He also added: “I have never been called up but you never know. I am ready for it, definitely. I feel I deserve a chance but it’s up to the coach and if I don’t get a chance then I’m not good enough so I need to keep improving.”

With several clubs eyeing his signature, a spot in the Dutch World Cup squad will surely enhance his growing reputation.
